Does the Bates Method Work?

Are you hesitatnt about getting involved in practicing a method like this when you aren’t sure if it works?

Evidence that the Bates Method WorksThe Bates method is part of an overall holistic approach to health. The idea is that the body is quite capable of identifying and fixing problems, given the right conditions. If the vision is blurry, that is no minor problem. It’s a major problem by any standard, and the body is intelligent enough to do what it takes to fix it. The body is grown and continually regrown, reshaped, and readjusted. Are the eyes the one organ that can have such a major problem resulting from supposedly a tiny error in its size, and the body can’t seem to correct it over a short time? The return on effort would be massive. It fixes countless other problems it fixes on a daily basis to ensure that the whole system doesn’t come crashing down. A small miscalculation in the wrong spot would result in the body dying. This isn’t even considering how intelligent the body has to be to oversee the harmonic operation of so many interweaving systems to begin with.

So how could this happen? How could vision go blurry and not be immediately fixed? The answer is that you are doing it to yourself. You are continually causing the problem with the way you use your eyes. There is a right way to lift heavy objects to avoid hurting your back, there’s a right way to chew your food to avoid swallowing massive chunks that cause you to choke or have digestive problems, and there’s a right way to use your eyes to avoid causing too much strain on them. So you only have to re-learn how to use your eyes to avoid putting this strain on them, and any problem with them will quickly be fixed.

If you have a hard time believing in such a philosophy, you will have a hard time believing that something like the Bates method is effective.

So just see if it makes sense. Read some material, and if none of it rings true for you, you can be on your merry way and feel confident that you aren’t missing out on anything.

Many articles written by Bates in medical journals, in his book, and his Better Eyesight Magazine, as well as many articles and books written by his wife and other people over the last century, suggest that reversing eyesight problems was an easier task in the past than it is today. In modern times we may be dealing with a number of additional factors that affect vision in a bad way, possibly increasing the incidence of vision problems and/or making it harder for people to recover normal vision once they experience a problem. These possible factors include GMO food and less nutritious food, artificial lighting, computers and TVs, and highly stimulating environments that may be too much for some people to handle. The rates of myopia have shot up in some cultures, while others remain mostly unaffected.

See our Evidence page for a list of various sources of evidence that the Bates method does work and that the traditional models of myopia and other vision problems are wrong.

I founded iblindness.org in 2002 as I began reading books on the Bates Method and became interested in vision improvement. I believe that everyone who is motivated can identify the roots of their vision problems and apply behavioral changes to solve them.
