Won't start this guns blazing, but it's damn hard to control my anger at you people. The more I read of this website the sicker I get. You people think it's right to tell sick people they can beat glaucoma or retina pigmentosa by closing their eyes and shoving their palms over the top, or cataracts by forcing themselves to blink more? I think anyone who'd teach such a thing is even more repulsive than any other type of quack. At least a homeopath's not harming his misguided clients apart from taking their money, while what you say leads to irreparable ocular damage, since people don't go to the doctor.
I want to tell people on this website that there isn't a way of treating your eyes beyond going to a qualified eye doctor. There's a reason the Bates method's been ignored for almost a hundred years now by practically all of society.. because it doesn't work. Only glasses can cure refractive errors, and it's a proven fact in ophthalmology that they don't make your eyes "worse" in the process! They would've gotten worse if you'd never worn them. Don't try to torture yourself by going through this little scam, just put on your glasses and enjoy life with clear vision. The owner of this website owns a store which he sells his products in, which should convince you what his motivation is, actually, of all of the very few "Bates" teachers, or advocates, even if some little part of them thinks they're doing good.
Do you people even see the contradictions you get yourselves into, even IN your beliefs? You've told people they can't improve their eyesight by effort, and then you've told them to make an effort to blink more, or try to make one point in their vision seem clearer than all the others. You've told them to make an effort to remember and imagine things. Make an effort to "palm." Here's a tip, you can't accomplish anything in life without effort. Like the site owner, who also promotes a bodybuilding store on this same website, thinks you can get muscles without making an effort?!
And how do you think your little central fixation idea works anyway? oh man.. You think people can walk through life seeing a little point no bigger than a dot the best? You have to take everything in your visual field into account to function. You have see all of it just as good, not a tiny little fraction. If you look at someone's face, you have to see all of their face, not a little dot. If you look at a film on TV, you have to see everything there. Play a video game, have to see everything, concentrate on the whole screen to see where your enemies are at. If you're a pilot flying a plane, you have to see everything in front of your face.
So people donning glasses are tense and neurotic and can't concentrate, but people without them are totally relaxed? Most people's experiences are the opposite if anything. Lots of people who wear glasses have been the intellectuals of the past 200 yrs. Tons of people with normal sight have average or below average intelligence, like construction workers or farmers. Most criminals don't wear glasses.
You've said "Don't stare?" So people should make an effort not to stare, to move their eyes around like crazy people? That makes tons of sense, and theres that word effort again, isnt there... I've seen lots of people here telling each other to forget their eyes. Guess what? you just end up staring because you aren't telling them to do anything.
I've read nonsense on this forum about how nutrition improves eyesight, which is obvious bs because no scientific study's ever found that. Same goes for deep breathing.
Please just stop torturing people with lies and close this website down.

Wow! Well, at least he posted it in the right forum. I've seen this before with the most vocal critics. He takes one word, "effort", and instead of trying to understand the point and context, he just stops right there, satisfied that he has found a fatal flaw after a moment of inspection that we all must not have noticed. But this is great, because I see the confusion he's communicating as far as effort, central fixation, and staring, and this is a reminder that I need to describe the concepts better and in more detail. The current descriptions don't do them justice, and it may be time to use different words than these to avoid most of the confusion, although I don't like the idea of making up my own new terms. I have plans to rewrite things soon anyway in some major revisions to the site. Dave

Dear 'fallacies', Let me be the first to second David's response and to reject your arguments against what we are saying, doing, and achieving with the Bates Method. You are like one of the misled sheep of the Catholic Church, which rejected Gallileo's assertions for hundreds of years, keeping everyone in the dark as long as possible. Luckily, we cannot be subjected to the Inquisition which you no doubt would employ against us if you could. More to come.

They would've gotten worse if you'd never worn them. Actually it's well-established that glasses do make myopia worse, see this paper; the question is whether the effect is entirely temporary. Nonetheless, it is certainly true that vision can worsen even if glasses aren't worn, and I doubt anyone here would dispute that. fallacies wrote: The owner of this website owns a store which he sells his products in, which should convince you what his motivation is, actually, of all of the very few "Bates" teachers, or advocates, even if some little part of them thinks they're doing good. That argument can just as easily be (and sometimes is) used to discredit those who sell glasses and contacts. fallacies wrote: Do you people even see the contradictions you get yourselves into, even IN your beliefs? Like the site owner, who also promotes a bodybuilding store on this same website, thinks you can get muscles without making an effort?! "Effort" in this context refers to the kind of effort it requires to hold your breath. When I learned to juggle, I found myself holding my breath a lot, something I still often do while trying to keep five balls going. This kind of effort is likely detrimental to progress in developing a skill. fallacies wrote: And how do you think your little central fixation idea works anyway? oh man.. If you're a pilot flying a plane, you have to see everything in front of your face. Try reading a whole screen of text without moving your head or your eyes. Try reading just a line of text that way. It won't work. At most, we can clearly see only a very small area at once. When looking at a screen or someone's face, you normally shift from point to point without thinking much about it. The Bates method aims to improve that shifting. fallacies wrote: So people donning glasses are tense and neurotic and can't concentrate, but people without them are totally relaxed? I doubt that most Bates people would say this. fallacies wrote: You've said "Don't stare?" So people should make an effort not to stare, to move their eyes around like crazy people? Locking your eyes is like holding your breath. fallacies wrote: I've read nonsense on this forum about how nutrition improves eyesight, which is obvious bs because no scientific study's ever found that. Nice post Dude !!! See you in three month when i will have my eyes examined buy the "doctor" and the diagnosis of 0.00 or maybe 0.25 or something that left from my -12 and -13. Modern medicine only made me be a step from retinal detachment and they where wanting me to believe that nothing can be done. Screw modern medicine !!! Being a doctor means that you help and treat people or relive them from their pains. I don't know a word to describe how bad it is to tell people that they have no hope and not treat then nor relieve them. Modern medicine has only one treatment for all the eye problems. Seriously, there is a way to relieve any pain and anything. Literally. The name of this way is Euthanasia! Otherwise, is you are not qualified for Lasik, you will stick with glasses and contacts for a Life and you will be not functional and you will be unable to do many nice little things that people with normal vision found everyday-boredom-causers. So, if my Sith ways of vision improvement can give me my sight back, or relieve the symptoms, or make me better psychologically and give me a better state of mind, i will follow them all the way... Whose with me?

hi i'd just like to point out something. If you think David's motivation for making this site is his bodybuilding shop, fair enough. IMO there are far more effective ways to advertise your bodybuilding shop than to do it via a "eye improvement scam". It doesn't even make sense. Your saying that he's trying to sell his products through an "eyesight improvement site"??? Also, many people have written blogs about there journey with their bates method. Some of them are very long. They have been posting everyday for years. Whats their motivation? I don't see any links to shops or this website in their blog page. Who on earth would these bloggers waste a 30 minutes everyday writing a blog to sell a "scam" that gives them no reward if people do it. Ares wrote: :D Nice post Dude !!!

Sorry, but your aiming this at the wrong people. The optitions are exploiting desperate people - glasses are expensive, and especially in todays economic circumstances most people can't afford to pay out hundreds of pounds for reading glasses, driving reading glasses, distance lenses for inside, and presciption sunglasses. Thanks

I know that's an old topic, but I've found something interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjLNTEDD ... ature=plcp this is a video with the eyetracking of a person flying a helicopter. Hope this can add some insight. The person clearly stops at specific points rather than smothly screens the landscape.. This is actually a whole channel presenting eyetracking during different activities.

Those shifts are mad mad mad!
As a myope I can tell you that video is enough proof for me personally to accept bates concept of shifting.
I could never have of imagined eyes moviing so fast and precise.
Also, can someone answer my question it may be slightly off this topic but hey...
How would I know what shifts are healthy for me. For example doing microscopic shifts at like 100+,read a sign for a car lot meters is that going to cause strain, because it usually causes me to lose my clear vision.
