I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that it is a so-called "illusion" of normal sight. When people experience the universal swing, everything in their visual field appears to be "rocking" back and forth continuously. Again, I could be wrong, but the idea is that the eyes are always moving, however small the movements may be. Practicing the long swing is one way to "simulate" the universal swing and is often helpful in achieving it in the end.

But, just to be safe, someone else should confirm this. :)

Pikachu, yes, the universal swing is an illusion of normal sight, that everything is slightly moving, pulsing or vibrating, not static and still. I can see this most easily on the chart, and am starting to see it elsewhere which is a big heartening sign of progress for me. I knew Crown was going to ask about this, and I admit it was kind of a test to see how much Bates material he's read -- Bates mentions the universal swing a lot. Crown, please read what Bates has written and digest it, re-reading it if you feel like you didn't get it all. His sentences are each worth reading slowly to absorb the material -- there's no "fluff". You can't skim it or quickly swallow one or 2 articles and think you understand the Bates Method. This is what those people do who later loudly proclaim that it doesn't work!

Your Right The Only Parts I Read Was In His Book About The Myopic Children And The Palming (As I Thought This Pertained To Me Most) And When I Scanned The Shifting And Swinging I Incorporated Trying To Central fixate & Move My Eyes More On One Object Not Stare ( I Also Go Outside With My Friends Alot & Asked Them To Look At A Point And See If Their Eyes Move At First It Was A NO Then I Kept On Telling Them To Concentrate And Them They Said YES :P I Started Fully Reading About The Swinging And Shifting Section Yesterday I Heard The Term Universal Swing But Dident See It Fully Defined Anywhere I Searched It Up But No Luck Nut I Guess You Could Imply After Reading What It Is :P

I Still Havent Got A Swing Yet I TRy It MY Eyes Seem To Feel Weird And Its RElaxing ( Open) But I Dont See a Swing?)

It can be confusing the way Bates refers to the universal and optical swings. What I came to understand was that the two are very closely related, except that the univeral swings refers more to the connectivity of stationary objects perceived w/ the optical swing. The optical swings refers more to just the motion itself. If one thing, or part of a thing moves, the whole thing moves, and everything else connected to it moves, together. It would require some kind of strain to see just one part of a letter moving, and not the entire letter, and just a letter moving, and not the whole line, and just a line, and not the whole page, etc., it's all connected. Of course, even though there's this sense of universal connectivity, we should still see one part best at all times.

I can notice the optical swing all the time now, but the universal not really in the extreme peripheral so much as in the immediate peripheral. I can see the letters on the computer screen moving, the lines in the peripheral moving along too, the monitor screen and some things around it, but not much beyond that, unless I help it out with a slight sway.

Visual acuity varies widely with stress level, how rested you are, whether you feel confident and relaxed or not, whether you're hungry or thirsty, etc. It was what he measured it as at that time. It might have improved as soon as you left the office! Keep doing the Bates practices and it will get steadily better and more stable. If you're seeing an improvement at home that means it's working.

hey Crown, what could you see on the chart before and from what distance compared to now?

It is possible that you were straining a lot at the doctor's office, as Nancy said.

Let's face it, it is also possible that your eyes got worse. Sometimes the Bates method is not practiced correctly and in that case it will not work. I can't tell from here if you practice correctly or not. Is there a Bates teacher near you? That would be my first recommendation. Second best would be to get distance lessons or form a group that studies the Bates method and practices together.

At least change something that you are doing.
If you just keep doing what you are doing now, it is unlikely that you will improve your vision. That is why I recommend getting a teacher or some friends to practice with in person so that you can learn more.

good luck!
