Well for 11/2 years I reduced my prescription by 1 1/2 diopeters, did the 'vision for life' method and used +2 reading glasses.
It worked and that is very awesome (-6 to -4.5) - and thank you Otis. I would have loved to continuem had I not contracted a serious fungus infection in my right eye. :'( Thankfully the eye was saved, and I'm counting my blessings, but I am left with a scar over the pupil. Now the scar is superficial, but it leaves my vision blurry (or it's more like there's a water mark on the print). Where I used to be wonderfully nearsighted, I no longer can boast . It seems like the near vision was affected most.
My 1st question is if anyone knows if any of the exercises could help diminish it ?
Through this time I had stopped all exercises. I only wore a contact in my left eye and all that wonderful work of getting to a -4.5 is now gone. I am for sure that the extra strain of using the left eye to see, was the downfall. In fact I believe it is even worse than -6 now. :'(
I have just started to get back into 'vision for life' because I know that i can get the vision getting better again. -here we go up the mountain again.. I can't wait to be able to wear a contact in my right eye again so that things will be
more balanced. My right eye has not had any prescription for 3 months. I don't really use it unless I am reading which isn't often these days.. I will be very curious to know whether the vision (albeit the scar) has improved . I know that the
muscles are extremely tight when looking to the extreme left. My right eye has no problem with this . I surmise it has less astigmatism for sure. I guess only time will tell when I will go for a prescription.. thanks
Thats a tough one, as far as I can recall, I don't recall anything in Bates' writings about healing of a corneal scar. I'm rather curious about how this will proceed. Talk with your doctors about this one, it may be a thing that just takes time to heal by itself, but at this point if it really is corneal hazing I would try and contact a specialist. There are techniques and medicines to counter hazing of the cornea, but I don't know enough about them to give you any advice.
Thank you Otis - it's nice to hear from you again. When I was working, I used the +2 glasses all the time while
on the computer, and the neatest thing was that my eyes never got tired like they used to. And then when I
would take them off to go on a break or lunch I could actually see better in the distance ! Talk about immediate
gratification
As for my scar. :-\ Thanks Urban for your reply. My cornea doctor is supposed to be one of the best in my area and
he told me that the scar will not go away on it's own.. He doesn't think any kind of surgery, like laser would help.
He seems to be very careful as which I am VERY grateful (thank you God) . As far as I know the only thing he wants to try is using cortisone drops to see if that will shrink the scar, but there are no guarantees. Of course it's also hard to know
when to start using them, as there can't be any fungus spores in the cornea. Unfortunately there is no way
to tell and as some of you may not know, Cortisone actually spreads/grows fungus !
I have been working alternatively and been going to a ladywho does specialized kinesiology. She has helped me a lot with the healing and movement of the eye. To dateI have been doing figure 8's which increase electricity, and nutritionally have been taking a lot of protein, minerals, and eye vitamins, and of course much prayer..
I was wondering if either of you could advise me on this though. Since I have not had a prescription on my right
eye for 3 months and haven't done much reading has it been bad for my eye because it hasn't been focusing.
Does this make the eye stronger or lazier ? I mean of course I can see, but obviously my left eye has taken
over the task of seeing far.. I'm not sure how much focusing my right eye is actually doing.. ? I don't want
my sight in my right eye to get worse through inactivity, so if I should be doing something like maybe more
reading, I would do that. Any thoughts on this ? I hope I make sense here. Also may I add that currently

I would try wearing glasses. Ask an optometrist to prescribe a pair of glasses that just lets you see 20/30 (6/9). This is reduced enough to relax the eyes and allow for positive change. In this way you can start using your hazy eye again. Contacts have many disadvantages when improving the eyesight.
Bates did write about curing certain types of scarring, I don't know if yours is included. What he did to help is what he did for everyone - prescribe rest. Read about palming and swinging in the 'method of the month' forum section and try some different techniques that are suggested. Do what is most relaxing for you and that brings the best results.
Hi Otis. Of course, had I not had contacts, I would never have gotten an infection, but the scar came from the edema, not the contacts. I was treated initially with antibacterial drops but because I strictly had a fungus infection, it got worse over mere days. Meanwhile, while waiting for results for the culture to come back (takes forever) I was given cortisone drops. These are given so that edema does not happen, and thus preventing scarring. Unfortunately, cortisone spreads/grows fungus and so it worked against me, and spread my local fungus infection throughout my whole eye. I lost my eyesight almost completely, and bad edema happened. This is why I have a scar over the pupil. But.. I am definitely counting my blessings.. my eye was saved (a combo of antifungal medication eye drops, drinking 1 bottle of Silver a day, Silver eye drops, kinesiology, nutritional supplements and prayer), and the scar is just superficial now - I'm still very hopeful !

Well OD refers to the right eye, Oculus Dextrus. The CYL refers to cylindrical correction and I think ADD refers to spherical correction. These would be your myopia and astigmatism prescriptions, so you should try to find out some idea before purchasing your glasses. If you really need to know, take your glasses to an optometrist. I believe that the prescription can be found from examining the glasses.
oops I do have/know CYL ! and the ADD I'm told, is for those who have bifocals, so I'm ready to order ! ;D

finding a minus lens that "clears" the 20/20 line. (This is a very simple
process -- which you could do yourself if you had the minus lens set.)
Let us say he finds a -6 lens clears the 20/20 line. He then takes a
"astigmatic" lens and attempts further clearing. I he finds that
a -1 cyl. at 90 degrees makes the 20/20 line sharper -- then that
becomes your "prescription".
-6 sphere, and a -1 cyl at 90 degrees

It's ok, I got all the information I needed, but your comment about astig interests me because
when I reduced my overall prescription I really didn't know how much to reduce the astig by !?
Are you saying I could have reduced my asigmatism presciption entirely, or please explain. I only reduced it by .25,
as you can see below.

Subject: My dislike of that "astigmatism" so-called "correction".
The measurement is made in a dark room with a poorly illuminated Snellen. The
result is sometimes and error in the measurement. I ALWAYS ask that
I be given NO ASTIGMATISM -- consistent with DMV requirments. (I would
rather have 20/25 and no astigmatism, than 20/20 with astigmatism.
If the OD will not comply with this reasonable request -- I find another
OD who will.

Yes, it is very simple.
You just take the "Spherical" in your prescription, and then add 1/2 the Astig part
to the Spherical. This is called "Spherical Equivalent".

I am pleased that David maintains this "open" site where we can
honestly discuss the preventive second-opinion.
I am sad that too many ODs feel that they can "omit" this
type of discussion with you, and not send you
