When these infinite dots are seen with the eyes closed, bates came to realize and understand that these are illusions as they can't be seen in reality as the eyes are shut, since they are not seen they must then be imagined, try covering the eyes and picture a plain black field like the darkest of night skies, or a familiar black object.
