Advice for teachers? - Joe100 - 08-02-2016
I have just heard about the Bates method of Eye improvement a few weeks ago. I have myopia 4.75 my last test (it's been a few years). I have bifocals and the reading is +1.50
I am looking throught the internet and it is a little confusing who are the good teachers and books. I would appreciate it if I could get referrals to books, websites or teachers that have you have found helpful.

My favorite book at the moment is Take Off Your Glasses and See, which I'm re-reading now after many years. I don't remember any of this stuff being in it the first time!

Is the book based on the Bates Method? I couldn't tell from the chapter titles.
Do you know anything about Esther Joy van der Werf and her teaching?
Does a person need a teacher. Is the Bates Method of vision emprovement straight forward enough to do alone?

Hi Joe. I know Esther personally, who interned with the behavioral optometrist who trained me in NY state before she moved west.
I think the Bates Method is straightforward, and it's also easy to get off track. There's a lot of information about vision improvement out there now, some not so helpful. This forum is a wonderful resource. Your own experience will be the best teacher -- how are you straining? Can you lessen that? What are you doing (or not doing!) when you can see particularly clearly? A good teacher can help you avoid pitfalls and speed up your progress, and you won't need one if you practice on you own. This is especially true if your prescription is low, and you don't have high anxiety or buried rage your glasses are hiding.

Thanks for the replies. I guess it would be good to find a teacher. I have anxierty issues and a lot of muscle tension.
