So does NVI spark a decrease in diopter and rx rating...? - Advantage - 04-28-2006

because I feel like MEPs gave me a very wrong rating when I did the refraction thing and I got DQ'ed...My OD measured me at 20/400 but some days I feel like I can see much more depening how much time I spend out of my glasses. W/e I put my glasses on and take them off, things are blurry but it clears as I spend more time off my "crutches."

Advantage,

Your prescription or diopter reading is useful for a specific kind of information - how unfocused your eyes were at a particular time, in the optometrist's office during the testing situation. It doesn't indicate so much about your quality of vision the rest of the day, and on other days. Vision fluctuates much more than many conventional eye care professionals give credit for, particularly in people who don't wear glasses and in children. For this reason, I don't consider prescription changes very relevant to the process of improving one's vision, and I believe it's misleading to reference it in the context of vision improvement. Because vision improvement isn't about slowly hacking away at your prescription level, it's about learning to use the eyes correctly, which is a fairly unpredictable stop-and-go process, with periods of vision as bad as ever and periods of perfect clarity.

I'm more interested in whether a person has flashes (or longer periods) of clear vision, whether they are able to see things they couldn't before, and other signs that their vision is improving significantly in a subjective manner.

Prescriptions are referenced by people improving their vision because their prescription was the initial knowledge they brought into the situation and they refuse to let it go and think about vision in a more flowing manner that isn't so much in their control.

I've had clear flashes before where I can see things I normally can't see but the biggest one of them all happened 2 years ago...I was at the DMV office and I had to read this chart with symbols on it through my right(bad) eye...I was unable to see it clearly with my glasses but some way somehow, that chart became clear as crystal. I read it and I was very surprised. Back then I never knew about NVI. It just happened so suddenly I was like whoah...

Yep, it can happen at any time. Our vision is always ready to return to clarity if we let it.

What's your story David...? Did you try NVI and reduced your time from wearing corrective lenses...?

Re: So does NVI spark a decrease in diopter and rx rating...? - David - 05-05-2006

Yeah, I don't wear glasses anymore. I stopped wearing contacts when I started the process a few years ago, after several months of trying reduced prescription contacts and not having much improvement. I had moderate myopia, astigmatism, and intermittent exotropia. And of course the general eyestrain and other stuff that commonly goes along with it. My vision still isn't usually perfect - just some periods of perfect vision (perfect is hard to define, but very clear anyway). Currently I can read about 20/30 on the chart pretty consistently, or better for brief periods.
