Hey all,
I'm 18, turning 19 in a few months. My name is Marco and I'm from Serbia. My vision used to be perfect, maybe even better than it Smile Two weeks ago it decreased by a little bit (I think?). I can still see nearer objects perfectly but farther ones (10+ meters distance, maybe more) are kinda blurry. Sometimes I can read stuff such as caffe bar names, and sometimes not. Also, I noticed that when I watch TV from a farther distance (like when I eat) my sight isn't clear and I usually have to focus to see the text that is displayed; However, I don't really have any problems with the characters displayed, only with text (especially when the text color is similar to the background). Another thing I noticed is that I sometimes need to focus to see smaller text on the blackboard in school, mostly in the morning while I'm still sleepy, and I think it's good otherwise. In addition to being sleepy (Only first or first two classes) it might be important to add that I'm kinda tired when I wake up in the morning (i go to bed usually around midnight and wake up at 06:30 in the morning for school) so it might be connected to the sight problems with the blackboard in the morning.
I think it's just because I spend a lot of time on the computer (usually like 6 hours a day, sometimes less, sometimes more, but I'm like on it everyday) and I never rest my eyes or take a breaks during the play (My mom used to mention that every time, that I should rest my eyes for a few minutes per hour). I think it's just that, but I became worried about it since it's ''not going back to normal'' (tho I still don't rest my eyes). What should I do? Should I go see an eye specialist and do the vision test, or just rest my eyes and be on the computer less? (Gonna be less on it now when the school year ends anyway, since I'm an tennis player and gonna train almost all day). Anyone has any suggestions? Please help, I'll really appreciate it.

Well 10+ meters is more than 20 feet. Perhaps you had better then 20/20 (6/6) and are drifting towards 20/20?

Tennis should help your eyes, as they will be moving around and focusing...... Also try the Bates Method.... I'm pretty new to Bates too so many people on here should be able to help you.

Unfamiliar writing on the blackboard can cause eyestrain, espicially when you must hurry to see it, copy it.
Sit closer to avoid this and practice Bates method.

Yeah I think I had more than 20/20, but it became different all of a sudden. I'm afraid if it stays this way, so I guess I'm gonna visit a specialist and do the test.

What happened 2 weeks ago? Anything stressful arise at school or anywhere?

You can print an eyechart from the I-SEE website (made by Alex Eulenburg) or an eyechart from any website and place it 20 feet away and do the test yourself. But if you want to rule out anything like macular degeneration, retinal detachment, glaucoma, etc.

You should practice the Bates Method now and not risk it getting worse. Don't bother saying anything about the Bates Method to an optometrist, they will just put it down and you down.

go to David's main page iBlindness.org and read up on the Bates Method. It will help.

Dear Marco,

Rather that guessing about your vision, I suggest you actually check it. That way there will be no doubt.

Typically we work 6 hours a day on our computer, and then we look up (at dusk) and it is indeed blurry out there.

Why not actually check you own Snellen?? You have the computer. Just click here, and then on "Display" several times.

You will get a 20/60 line. (Read at 6 meters).

Get a friend to change the size to 20/40, then 20/30, 20/25 and 20/20.

You must read 1/2 the letters to pass the line.

Give it a try. If a little blurry, you might find that from 20/40, and some work with Bates you can get a "clear flash" to 20/20.

This is a good idea, and a good result. Continue using the method you choose, and in time the "clear flash" 20/20 will become permanent.

I did it and I see everything. I think it's just my eyes that are tired. I found out that I see perfectly, but, if I'm on the computer for too long and try ti view smaller letters from a distance, it gets blurry sometimes. Same with TV. If I'm sitting on bed and watching it, it's perfect, but if I try to watch it from a distance letters get blurry sometimes. I think my eyes are just too much tired, so when I try to look at the fluorescent screen such as computer and TV, they enter that blurry state. So, after watching TV or being on the computer farther stuff can be blurry sometimes, lasting for a period of time before returning to the normal state. Otherwise I see perfect.

Dear Marco,

Subject: Wise to check yourself.

This is what Bates recommended (for almost 100 years).

That is that we pay attention to our Snellen, and, when we see our vision at 20/40 to 20/50, we look at our Snellens, and (before any minus lens is applied to us) we use his methods to clear back to 20/30 or better.

I am not "anti-minus lens" as such. I just urge that the person always use the "clear flash" methods of Bates to keep his vision as passing the legal standard in our country.

Yes, Bates advocated "correspondence" method, where you "empower" yourself and take responsibility to clear your Snellen yourself.

A lot of people don't understand that issue. It is not "medical", but a matter of teaching widsom and self-control. I am pleased that David maintains a site to further that process.

Keep an open mind, and if your Snellen goes down to 20/40 or 20/50, just "restart" the process that has worked for you.

Bates says it is normal for the clarity of vision to fluxuate.
Hows your diet? Any changes? Sugar, Aspartame?
Missing any vitamins..?

I think it's fine, but tbh I'm not getting enough vitamins, I don't rly like them, so I don't really use them in needed amounts (I guess). I mean, I do get them, but not that much. I rarely eat carrots, but since they're got for vision I'm gonna eat them more frequently. And about diet, there's nothing special. I'm not fat, but rather skinny, but not that much skinny tho.

Meh, as far as I remember, nothing special, but stress happens and goes all the time, it's present in everyone's lives.
And yeah, I noticed that my sight is only blurry after I'm done with the computer, so I gotta rest my eyes for like 1-2 hours or after I'm done with sleeping (since I didn't practice Bates method yet, but I assume it works the same) it's perfect again.

Hi Marco,

Here are some suggestions from the Bates method, it sounds like your sight is getting blurry from straining to see your computer. Many people don't blink while looking at the computer, and they breathe shallowly.

Take a break every 15 minutes (set a timer on your watch or some pop-up on your screen to remind you). Blink softly during the break(don't flinch). Stand up or stretch out a little. Feel your breath reaching your abdomen. Look out a window or around the room. Even if you do this for just 10-30 seconds every 15 minutes it will help a lot if you are consisitent with it. My eyes have improved a lot and I think it's mostly from doing little things like this the whole day.

When you go back to your computer you may find you are more comfortable and can breathe and blink easier while you work (for the next 15 minutes!)

Another thing you can do: every hour cup your hands over your eyes (so you don't touch your eyes but exclude the light from them), close them, rest your elbows on a cushion or something else comfortable and just relax for about 5 minutes. Let your thoughts drift to things you're happy about or some good memories from the near or distant past.

If you are consistent with these restful practices the whole day or at least the whole time you are on the computer, I would be very surprised if you still have any problems by Monday!

You should try palming or acupressure, it could release the strain from focusing on a computer screen for awhile.

I palm or look in the distance after I've had my face down in something near for say 5-10 minutes.
