Practicing Bates method gets the mind, eyes to break habits that cause strain, blur and to learn, activate correct use of the eyes, relaxation, clear vision.
Two types of hereditary causes : organic (genetics) or functional (environmental).
Dr. Bates developed his method because he believed a functional, instead of organic, cause to be the starting point of defective vision.
He observed that children are great imitators. Children often reflect the behavior, values, and attitudes of their parents and the authorities they encounter. If those people are nervous, then children will also become nervous. Strain is contagious. Any strain wrecks havoc on the entire body: it raises blood pressure, impairs the immunity system, tenses the muscles. It worsens vision. When strain is chronic, its effect on vision is also chronic.
The very last sentence aforementioned is what Dr. Bates believed (functional). It is in direct disagreement with what most eye doctors think. This difference of opinion, however, led Dr. Bates to believe that a method could be developed to restore deteriorating vision to normal and better.
In Western society, most people (including eye doctors) have been "trained" to believe that genetics is behind any hereditary cause of poor vision. They are reluctant to believe anything else, that lasting vision problems could be due to being in a state of chronic strain. This is surprising considering how the eye doctors acknowledge that visual acuity can be affected by emotional changes. Negative emotions, when temporary, always raise blood pressure temporarily... Negative emotions, when permanent, also raise blood pressure permanently. Why cannot the doctors say the same for sight? If the slightest emotion always has the power to change visual acuity, it would logically follow that a chronic state of emotion stored in muscle memory and every nerve of your body would also produce a chronic change in visual acuity.
The Bates method is designed to reverse that chronic effect through relaxation.
unless you were born with congenital blindness, your poor eyesight, as well as that of your fellow siblings, isn't due to any malicious gene encoded into your DNA. it is solely the fault of your parents that you are this way. while the blame lays on them however, you have to have the initiative to change the legacy of poor eyesight that they bequeathed you.
