Hey guys. This was probably asked before but I had 2 quick questions. When we swing, the proper procedure is to move our head as we swing and imagine a pencil or brush at the end of our noses right? My question is, does this neglect the design of our eyes to be able to move them without moving our head? If we don't use the muscle to move our eyes on their own, could they deteriorate any?
Also, if anyone knows, I was wondering on the whole thing about sunning. Did Bates originally teach to sun with open eyes? Was that safe, and how come it changed?

No, that is incorrect. Dr. Bates never ever stopped recommending people to sun gaze; if anything, he placed even more emphasis on it towards the end of his life, realizing the immense benefits one can reach when done correctly.

Yes, it is completely safe, but great care should be taken when recommending sun gazing to those with imperfect sight; the damage resulting from this activity is always because you were straining. However, it is by becoming able to look at the sun without strain that perfected sight is attained, thus this is the greatest test towards your mental control and ability to relax the vision at will. Sun gazing is one of the greatest methods developed by Bates, and it is only the idiots who remain in fear of light that discourage it.
It was changed because of pure stupidity of the disciples (Corbett, one of the great idiots), who mocked the Original Cure System, changing and creating little 'additions' thus distorting and destroying the method.

Did he neglect anything? Not to my knowledge, no. Dr. Bates was an erudite, a master in his art, a true genius, a perfectionist. He worked in a manner very different from the norm, yet so brilliant that he makes the modern 'scientists' look like arrogant and naive fools. He worked with his basis in fact, and fact alone he worked upwards and onwards. And with facts, he developed his cure system. (Not with theories, to which it appears our ophthalmologists and doctors are so attached.) Bates would test every possibility and impossibility, gleaning what he could from the observations. He did not purposely neglect anything, but took into account all harm and benefit. If you read his texts, I think you will find that the methods were designed with this sort of ingenuity.

It is a nice question. No, your eyes will not deteriorate, and your eyes are always active anyway regardless of whether you move them. The movement is in the mind, it is a direction of your attention. By swinging. it is not neglect of the physical muscle tissue with which you should concern yourself, but the illusion of the oppositional movement. The swing is of the mind, and not the muscle organs. When the mind is at rest, every other organ system is at rest and works flawlessly. Thus the same is true with regard to the vision system.

Mike, this is not the proper procedure for seeing the illusion of a swing. doing this does neglect the design of the eyes and can lead to more strain. It's an unnatural position.
But don't worry about the muscles deteriorating. They are constantly moving without you being aware of it.
The term "sunning" has gotten kind of ambiguous. It was originally used later than Bates to mean facing the sun with closed eyes to let the light shine through the eyelids, and turning your head a little so the light's moving. It's also been done with lightbulbs, but you'd need a hell of a strong bulb, and full spectrum light is probably best.
Bates's "sun treatment" had to do with using a magnifying glass to shake the focus of the light on the white of the eye for brief periods.
"Sungazing" is pretty clear - look at the sun. To my knowledge Bates never openly recommended sungazing but did note that some people could do it and with no permanent harm. But on the other hand, you have to figure that he probably had things in his arsenal that he chose not to put in his magazines. Heck, unless a guy had a book to his name, you could make a pretty decent argument that he never existed!
