I would also read fine print in the sun, shift on small objects with alot of small fine details at close distances to improve my close vision and look to the distance, shift on distant objects to keep distant vision clear.
Some people experience lowered vision in the pollen season due to pollen, dust sticking to the cornea.
My neighbor had glasses prescribed.
The glasses did not help because it was the pollen and pollution, dirt in the air sticking to the microscopic pollen and attaching to the cornea.
She drank more water, yawned more often to produce natural tears to flush the pollen off the eyes and was able to throw away the glasses.
I think a good screen is a big factor. I.e. an LCD/TFT screen with a very good resolution (everything smaller, which encourages them to exercise central fixation). High contrast is also a good thing because it makes the letters blacker and the background whiter (helps imagination of black). Most heavy computer users that I know that don't wear glasses don't seem to play many video games. If they do, they have a very good video card, and set the resolution and sharpness through the roof. I can't imagine that watching a low-resolution blurry video game on a crappy monitor can be good for your eyes. Same with reading gray blurry text all day.
Therefore, it doesn't seem like reading small, sharp, high contrast black text on a computer monitor hurts your eyes.

Most modern monitors have lesser radiation than their predecessors due to improved technology. Yet it is not known if computer radiation is really harmful. If the radiation is really harmful then sitting closer would be more harmful. But radiation does not work that way - the ill effects of EM radiation takes a lot of time to manifest.( something like ten-twenty years) You are not going to be sitting at 6 inches to the screen forever if you are going to correctly follow the Bates method. A few months of exposure to this radiation would not be hurt anyway. If you are using LCD then you probably dont have to worry about radiation at all.
If you believe that radiation from your monitor will harm your eyes, probably it will!
This will cause you strain unconsciously while looking to your monitor. Feel Empowered!
Our problems are self-imposed most of the time rather than "radiation" sort of stuff!
We underestimate the power of our mind in doing our work and tend to do our work somehow "action-oriented", but I think that the reverse is true action must be followed by a proper imagination.
