Because you squeeze your cornea. But this is only a temporary effect.

I've tried doing "squeezing exercises" in the American Vision Institute Program but they are no good. I think you even strain while doing them, because you put pressure on the eye ball.

Havn't you noticed that you see various color patterns or unusual visual phenomena when you squeeze or press the eyeballs? All these are partly due to pressure on the optic nerve that begins to send erroneous messages to the brain. Squeezing the eye is not good at all - it could damage the optic nerve. Massaging the eye should always be around the eyes and not on the eyeball itself.

By "squeezing" your eye you mean squinting?
You let the light pass through the eye lashes before it reaches your eye, which filters out the incident light, allowing only direct light to reach your retina. This produces an optical pin-hole effect, producing the illusion of improved eyesight.
There is also a bit more fluid that creates a slight meniscus on the edge of the eye lid, which touches the cornia. When you bring your eyelids close together, the fluid on the edge of both eyelids come in contact creating a natural sens, which helps focus the light on the retina. Same reason why your eyesight seems to be better in windy weather - tears create a natural lens to help focus light.
