There is a solar eclipse on August 1st, Friday, 2008.
Do not look at the sun during a eclipse because it can result in eye damage, blindness.
I advise people to avoid sunning and looking at/near the sun on the entire day of a solar eclipse.
I own an original March 1925 Better Eyesight magazine, and the subject of gazing at solar eclipses is mentioned in it:
Lodi, N. J., January 27.âAs the result of looking directly at the eclipse of the sun last Saturday, Louis Prestola, 54 years old, professes to have regained his sight after having been unable to see without glasses for seven years due to cataracts.
Pretola had undergone four unsuccessful operations for removal of the cataracts.
After he had gazed at the sun without smoked glasses he suffered severe pains, but within a few hours his sight began to return to normal and he discarded the strong glasses he had worn for seven years.âCincinnati "Inquirer."
I just might be tempted to view the solar eclipse!
Don't do anything stupid - if you have imperfect sight then you will be staring at it. The Sun will appear much less brighter than normal, even though it is still giving off the same light - don't be tricked into staring at the Sun. However, I don't know about closed eye sunning?

Its confusing to me since i have grown up being told to never look at the sun during a eclipse because it can cause blindness.
Special dark glasses are worn by people viewing the eclipse.
Does anyone know if its the same balance of light rays or if a different, unbalanced amount of light reaches the earth during the eclipse?
Just be responsible about it, like anything else. Obviously it isn't as cut and dry as the blanket statement propagated that we shouldn't look at the eclipse or we'll get retinal burns. That's like saying anyone who drives on a rainy night is going to run over a gaggle of toddlers in the crosswalk.
