close objects - light rays

My ophthalmology books state that light rays from distant objects are parallel.
Light rays from close objects about 20 feet and closer are divergent.
The eye must accommodate to focus the divergent light rays onto the retina.
In Dr. Bates book; The cure of imperfect sight by treatment without glasses, page 10, center of the page it says;
...., and all rays of light, both the convergent ones coming from near objects, and the parallel ones coming from distant objects, are focussed behind the retina, instead of upon it.

Is this a misprint? Should it say; the divergent ones coming from near objects?

That is a misprint.

Light from the distance is parallel.

Light from closer objects is "diverging" -- unless
you use a lens.

What do you think of eyeglasses impairing the vision of people that look through the lenses of a person wearing eyeglasses when talking, listening to them, such as; a kid not wearing eyeglasses looking at a teacher that wears eyeglasses, looking through the teachers eyeglasses to see the teachers eyes?
I know the strain in the teachers eyes can be contagious but maybe looking through the teachers eyeglass lenses also causes strain.
I dont mean the kid is wearing the teachers glasses, i mean the kid is looking in through the front of the teachers eyeglasses when watching the teachers face.

Dear Clark,

My personal opinion -- little or no effect if you look at a person wearing a minus lens.

The effect of a -3 diopter lens on the natural eye. A disaster.

Bates was right about this. But just remember, he was a professional, and
many others (second-opinion) professionals had THE SAME IDEA. They
describe that minus as "POISION GLASSES FOR CHILDREN".
