Head Swing
#1
Don't know if this will help anyone but I thought I'd post an observation I had today while doing the Head Swing:

(description:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://seeing.org/techniques/theswings/headswing.html">http://seeing.org/techniques/theswings/headswing.html</a><!-- m -->)

I work on the computer alot and find that it's really difficult to keep from straining when looking at the screen even for short amounts of time. I tend to concentrate intensely, using my eyes, face and shoulders in a tightened way to get my work done. So I've made it a recent habit to set an alarm to go off every 30 minutes. When it does, I look up from my computer screen and do Head Swings for like 5-10 minutes.

The same as with all the other swings I've tried, i notice that really annoying 'jumpy' habit of my eyes skipping through the swing. They seem to get stuck on the same objects every single time i try the Head Swing. Plus, when I imagine drawing a line or using the 'nose feather' i feel my eyes bouncing up and down. So it's like I'm actually drawing a zig-zag line on top of the smooth line I imagine drawing. Very frustrating! and not that relaxing (although it's more relaxing than working at my computer).

Anyway, today something clicked for me, I don't know how, but this image came to me that my head was like a space helmet and I was looking through a small visor to see (way too much sci-fi as a kid i guess ;D ). My attention was instinctively pulled backwards away from my eyes where it usually is, and into the movement in my neck instead.

3 things happened:
1) I felt that the movement of my neck and head were smooth and controlled and totally un-rushed (my head actually felt kind of heavy like i was wearing a helmet)
2) I didn't even notice my eyes - no skipping, no jumping, no strain, no awareness of them at all. The opposite movement of the room was clearly apparent - like the room was sliding past the window of my 'helmet visor'
3) Blissful relaxation! My eyes, my head, my neck - all completely relaxed, perfectly coordinated and the movement felt effortless. It was such a pleasing feeling that I refused to stop after 10 minutes, and afterwards i was more relaxed than if i had taken an hour nap! yay! (and the room seemed clearer) Smile
