Also, discarding glasses is probably less of an option now than it was then. Not that many people drove motor vehicles in the 1920's.

Perhaps her eyesight is actually quite a bit better than -4. -4 means that things start to blur at a distance of about 25 centimeters (10 inches.) I would think it would be pretty tough to function ...

Those schoolchildren all had personal help from Dr. Bates and/or Emily. It's not fair to compare them to the average student who wants to improve his/her eyesight.
